The Japan Pension Service posted a document outlining the revisions to the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment System on January 6, 2021. Here is a brief summary:

Outline of the revisions:
The maximum payment period for Lump Sum Withdrawal Payments has been extended from 36 months (3 years) to 60 months (5 years), effective from April 2021.

Who is affected by these revisions?
National Pension: Anyone whose last contribution payment was made during or after April 2021
Employees’ Pension Insurance: Anyone whose final coverage month (the month before withdrawal from the Pension Insurance system) is April 2021 or later

*For those whose last contribution payment or final coverage month is March 2021 or earlier, the maximum payment period will be still be the previous maximum of 36 months (3 years).
