Residence tax is a tax that every resident in Japan, regardless of their nationality, pays to their local municipal office. You must pay this tax if you have an address in Japan as of January 1st and your income is above a certain threshold.

Those who pay on their own (General Collection) will receive a payment slip from the municipality where they reside in June, so make sure to pay by the due date. Those who work for a company and have residence tax automatically deducted from their monthly salary (Special Collection) do not need to pay the tax to the municipality themselves.

Based on information from the MIC, MOJ, and Sapporo City’s websites, our center has created a multilingual leaflet about the residence tax which explains payment methods, procedures to be followed when leaving Japan, and effects it may have on residence application, etc. Please take a look!
